IK Bio Jewelry was launched in 2015 by Iona Klais. The idea to start her business was inspired by her love of the unique jewelry made from natural materials from her native country of Brazil. IK Bio Jewelry offers a sophisticated selection of handmade pieces made from ecofriendly resources. The line includes earrings, necklaces, bracelets, and rings. All pieces are created by Brazilians artisans using sustainable materials. These include Capim Dourado (a beautiful shiny grass), Fibra de Banana (banana fiber) and Palha de Buriti (a type of palm tree). The store also offers a line of accessories and decorative objects.
Capim Dourado Jewelry
This beautiful golden grass exists only in the region of Jalapão in central Brazil. The grass flowers open in July and August and after pollination they produce seeds that mature in mid-September. At this time the stems are dry and bright and can be harvested. The harvest of the grass is regulated by the government in order to discourage premature collection. A further stipulation is that the flowers be cut and thrown back into the area from which they were taken. It is forbidden to remove grass from the region which means the jewelry must be made by local artists. The objective is to insure economic and social sustainability
Banana fiber Jewelry
This fruit is one Brazil main exports. The fiber from a banana tree is very sturdy. It is fully biodegradable and easy renewable, thus proves sustainable development.
Palha de Buriti Jewelry
This tall tropical palm tree grows naturally in Northern Brazil where it thrives in wet area swampy areas. The bio jeweler uses the silk from the stalk of the leaves. Collection of this resource follows ecofriendly guidelines.
Copper Wire Jewelry
The pieces which are made of palha de buriti and capim dourado are often completed with copper wire. Additionally, the copper wire may be plated with gold or silver and twisted into dedicated patterns to create elegant jewelry.
